Being sentenced to life in prison can be a pretty harsh blow, but that did not stop this particular man from redeeming himself. Convicted at the tender age of 14, Zubir (not his real name), was found guilty for the murder of his employer, according to Bernama.

Despite his seemingly bleak future, Zubir was determined to make the most out of his life in prison. Considering that he was a minor, there was still a glimmer of hope for Zubir, who had an opportunity to be released under royal pardon.

Spending 23 years behind bars, his efforts in obtaining an education certainly did not go to waste.

“I am currently pursuing my PhD in Business Administration at Open University Malaysia,” Zubir stated in an interview with Bernama.

He even revealed that he had already been offered a lecturer position even before his studies are completed.

Subject to all kinds of discouragement, this did not deter Zubir from persevering in his studies. He hopes that his example would benefit his fellow inmates, and shape him to become a better contributor to the community.

“Knowledge is key to changing mindsets, biases and prejudices. It has changed my perception on certain issues,” he said.

It’s always inspiring to see people get back up on their feet in making their dreams come true. Wishing all the best for Zubir and others who are working to turn their life around!
