Former prime minister Najib Razak gets sentence shortened from 12 years to 6 years

Back in August 2022, former prime minister Najib Razak was sentenced to a 12-year jail term for seven charges which includes abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million in funds from SRC International, in connection to the 1MDB sovereign fund scandal.

Other than a 12-year prison sentence, the ex-prime minister was also slapped with a RM210 million fine. However, in shocking news today, local newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported that Najib has officially been granted a shortened sentence. Following his 12-year jail term, the former prime minister will now be released in 2028. In addition to that, the RM210 million fine has now been reduced to RM50 million.

According to the local mail, prior to the official statement being released, Federal Territories Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa revealed that an official statement from the Pardons Board is upcoming. She also mentioned that an official meeting was being held at the Istana Negara regarding the matter.

Back in 2022, the Federal Court has made the decision to uphold the sentence that was handed down back in 2022, denying any any further stay of execution for the former prime minister.

“Appeals are unanimously dismissed and the conviction of the sentence has been affirmed. I pronounce warrant of committal”, said Chief Justice Tengku Maimun.
