For many Malaysians, taking their driver’s license is definitely something on their list as plenty of us rely on cars to commute around. And while the public transportation system in Malaysia has improved significantly, there’s no denying that some places are easier to get by with a car.
eTesting to be made available in April
According to local newspaper Berita Harian, it was reported that the Ministry of Transport has initiated a project to automate the driving license testing process. Named as eTesting, this system would allow students to take their driving tests without a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer in the car.
This would mean that candidates who are taking their tests will be alone in the vehicle without any physical supervision. Instead, the officers would be seated in a control room, monitoring and overseeing the candidates’ performance remotely. Along with advance tracking devices and cameras, results will be generated in real time further increasing the reliability and integrity of the assessment process.
However, it’s worth noting that the eTesting system will only be applied for their driving tests which are held in the centre itself and not for on-the-road tests. The test vehicles will be equipped with a sensor on the roofs and the confined area will be equipped with CCTV.
As of now, the eTesting system is still in its testing stages and will only be made available to 3 driving institutions across Selangor, Penang and Johor. Other than that, it was also reported that the eTesting system is scheduled to be fully utilised by 2030!
The driving institutions that will be offering the eTesting system in April are:
- IM Surfine Hitech in Hulu Langat
- Berjaya Driving Training Centre in Ulu Tiram
- Five Star Eternal Institute in Penang
