“As long as it’s not illegal”, 25yo M’sian works as cleaner in S’pore, earns over RM8,000 a month

No matter the occupation, one should never be looked down upon based on their career. Just recently, a 25-year-old father of one has shared his journey working as a cleaner in Singapore. And while he has received judgements from people around him, he remains resilient and finds it empowering to be able work a noble job.

25yo M’sian works as cleaner in S’pore, earns RM8,000 a month

Sharing his experience, Shahrul is a 25-year-old man working who’s been working in Singapore for over 3 years. Recalling the past, Shahrul told local daily, Harian Metro that prior to heading to Singapore, he ran a food business. Unfortunately, the food business did not work out for him and that’s when he decided to follow the footsteps of his sister-in-law, who was working in Singapore.

With his experience in the food and beverage industry, the father of one was able to land a job as a restaurant assistant. After working in a restaurant, he then decided to quit his job and search for a new opportunity. Unfortunately, even after 3 to 4 months of searching, he was still unable to find a job.

“Thankfully I was offered this job as a cleaner. I was hesitant at first but decided to go in with an open heart”, he said.

Commuting daily from Gelang Patah, Johor, to Singapore, Shahrul mentioned that this was one of the efforts he was making in order to save up money for his wedding and future.

Acceptance is key, there’s nothing to be ashamed about

“It was difficult to accept it at first, but as time passes, I’ve embraced it”, he mentioned.

While he has come to terms with his job, which brings him fulfilment, there are still a handful around him that has yet to understand his choice. Having obtained 5A’s in his SPM, many were questioning his choices to work as a cleaner in Singapore.

“Many have asked me why, and to that I’ll always say I’m grateful for the opportunity Allah has granted me”, said the man, adding that he doesn’t mind the occupation, as long as he is able to earn an honest living.

Sharing a day in his life, Shahrul reveals that he would travel into Singapore from home as early as 5am. By the time he reaches his workspace, he would begin tidying up the office space, as well as clean the toilets and pantry. Typically, Shahrul would be done with his tasks by 4pm but occasionally, he would be required to work overtime, but nothing more than 7pm.

“I’m not ashamed anymore. This is what I do and I’m earning a living honestly”, ending the interview.
