Given the global economic downturn that we are all experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it comes to nobody’s surprise at all that many of us may suddenly realise that our salaries don’t seem to be stretching quite as far as they used to. But just recently, one Penangite has raised more than just a few eyebrows after she took to social media to grouse about her salary.

Netizen lists out her expenses, claims she can’t survive living in Penang on RM4,000 salary

In a post that was shared to community Facebook page 槟城吹水站, a Facebook netizen hailing from Penang claimed that she was barely getting by while earning RM4,000 on a monthly basis. To prove her point, she went so far as to list down her monthly expenses, showing how quickly her seemingly comfortable salary would be reduced to a measly RM100 after paying off all of her commitments.

To start off with, her two costliest commitments naturally come in the form of the mortgage of a double-storey home, which costs RM1,900 per month as well as the lease on her Toyota Vios which amounted to RM700. This is then followed by petrol, which costs RM500, as well as an additional RM500 that she would earmark for her parents.

And finally, she would spend RM200 on her insurance premiums, and RM100 on her phone plan. This would bring her total monthly commitments to RM3,900, leaving her with only the paltry sum of RM100 to survive on for the rest of the month.

“Please don’t invite me to your weddings, please don’t invite me out for meals or to have coffee. RM100 is all I have to survive upon until the very end of the month.

I did consider going to Singapore to make a living, but I simply can’t afford to let go of Malaysia. For those of you reading, don’t be too greedy! Just be thankful that you can still afford to eat and have a roof over your head.

All in all, if you aren’t earning over RM7,000 in Penang, you’re no better than a beggar.” she wrote.

Netizens cast doubt over her claims

And while many netizens have empathized with her situation, others have questioned if she really was living off on RM4,000.
