“Work will begin after Thaipusam”, Batu Caves temple to undergo construction for new escalator

Batu Caves is a popular tourist attraction located just outside of Kuala Lumpur. It is a significant religious site for Hindus in Malaysia and is the focal point of the annual Thaipusam festival every year. One of the most iconic features about Batu Caves is the fact that the stairs leading up to the temple is painted vibrantly.

Batu Caves temple to undergo construction for new escalator

According to local newspaper MalayMail, the Batu Caves Hindu Temple Management will be looking at building an escalator as an alternative to the 272 flights of stairs. The temple committee chairman, Tan Sri R. Nadarajah revealed that the decision to build an escalator is to help the elderly and disabled devotees who are unable to reach the main temple by climbing the stairs.

“We hope that we will be able to receive support from the government”, said Nadarajah, adding that building an escalator is one of the two projects that’s happening in Batu Caves.

Other than an escalator, a multipurpose hall will also be in the works, which is estimated to cost around RM35 million. During the press conference with Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, he mentioned that during the Thaipusam festival, the ministry of Human Resource will be holding a a Kesuma Madani programme.

In an effort to further empower to community, 200 volunteers will be sent to the Batu Caves temple to assist the committee in managing the logistics during the Thaipusam festival, as well as setting up a booth to pass out information regarding employment and help the Indian youth register for technical courses.

Building an escalator would definitely be a great solution, especially for those who are unable to climb up the stairs due to old age or disabilities.
