Curry puff is a popular snack or appetizer that’s famous in Southeast Asia. Known for its flaky puff pastry filled with curry potatoes, vegetable and meat, this snack is often enjoyed by many Malaysians during teatime. Just recently, Taste Atlas, a Croatia-based experiential food guide has listed curry puff as one of the best pastries in the world!
M’sia’s famous snack curry puff ranks 5th out of 100!
According to the list posted on its website, ranking at 5th place is the iconic karipap, otherwise known as curry puff. Reading the description for the popular tea-time snack, the experiential food guide described it as a small deep-fried or baked pastry shell filled with thick chicken and potato curry.
“It is believed that the flavorful snack was invented by the Malays from the Malay Peninsula and parts of Sumatra and Borneo”, wrote Taste Atlas.
Because of its simplicity, the curry puff has quickly rose to fame, becoming a classic favourite snack not only for Malaysians but for people in Singapore and Thailand as well! With that said, there are also different versions of curry puff, where instead of the typical curried potatoes and chicken, the pastry is filled with tuna, sardines or even beef rendang!
Ranking at first and second places in the list are different versions of Portuguese egg tarts and egg custards, while the third and fourth place were claimed by Greek originated pastry.
