or many people, fishing is a good past time or hobby to have as it can be calming and helps train patience. Just recently, a 58-year-old man has decided to enter a fishing contest held at Pantai Rhu 10 in Penarik.
58yo M’sian wins a fishing competition by catching a pufferfish, sweeps RM105k cash prize!
According to local newspaper Harian Metro, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, a fishing competition was held and safe to say, it was a major success as over 2,000 participants attended the event. Following the event, 58-year-old contestant, Zahri Mamat managed to win first price by catching a pufferfish that weighs 5.2kg!

Speaking to the Malay mail, Zahri shared that during the competition, he has decided to use shrimp as his bait, in hopes of catching a swordfish. Unfortunately, the bait was eaten by a pufferfish instead and his fishing line broke. Seeing that it was broken, he immediately changed his line that was made to catch a pufferfish instead.
“Previously, I’ve caught pufferfishes but would always release them back into the water as they’re deemed as ‘worthless’, but in this case, the pufferfish is rather useful”, he mentioned.
Proving that his strategy was right, he managed to bait a pufferfish and finally managed to reel the fish in. Taking his fish to the weighing scale, the fish was said to have weighed 5.2kg, making him the winner of the fishing competition.
Didn’t expect to win
“When they announced my name as the winner, I was surprised because I genuinely didn’t expect to win”, he said.
Diving deeper, it seems like this fishing competition is not the first that Zahri has won. Apparently, back in 2010, Zahri has entered another fishing competition, where he won RM22,000!

“I’m still shocked because after 13 years, I’ve won a fishing competition again, but this time with a higher prize”, he mentioned.
When asked what he would do with the money won, Zhari shared that he will be saving up the money for his retirement and use some of it to treat his family and friends.
