It should go without saying that food safety is of paramount importance when it comes down to running a food business, whether it be a small stall or a large restaurant franchise. After all, any errors during the handling and preparation of food could lead to disasterous results, such as food poisoning or worse still, severe infections that require hospitalisations.
Unfortunately for one woman, she would wind up experiencing this first hand after purchasing curry puffs from a Ramadan bazaar recently.
Woman in Kuatan bought mouldy curry puffs from Ramadan bazaar
According to Mrs. Razali, she explained that she had visited a Ramadan bazaar on Thursday to buy some food and bought 2 packets of curry puffs. Upon returning home, her mother and sister bit into the curry puffs and were shocked to discover that the fillings tasted bitter and spat it out immediately.
But they were even more horrified to discover that the reason why the filling tasted bitter was because it had already gone mouldy!
“I was in disbelief as I didn’t expect this to have happened to me”, she said.
In her post, she shared that upon buying the curry puffs at the stall, they appeared to be slightly greasy, but otherwise in decent shape. What made it all the more worse was that when she inspected the other curry puffs she bought, Razali realised that they all contained mouldy fillings.
A photo which accompanied her post showed that the curry filling of the curry puffs were all covered in a noticeable layer of white mould, indicating that it was already spoiled.
Speaking to Wau Post, Mrs. Razali revealed that she went back to the store along with a few government officials to check out the store. While the stall operator did try to offer her a refund, she declined as she wanted the vendors to know that it’s unethical to sell food that isn’t fresh to customers.
“Imagine if a pregnant woman has eaten it, her health would be put in jeopardy”, she said.
What’s more, it is completely unacceptable to charge customers for food that had already gone bad. She adds that it wasn’t her intention to seek for any explanation from the vendors when she headed back to the store the next day, as she only wanted them to see for themselves how mouldy their food was.
Apparently, the vendors claimed that the curry puffs she bought had been part of a batch that they did not manage to sell out completely n Wednesday.
“They said that they checked with the supplier on what to do with the leftover curry puffs and the supplier told them to just keep it in the fridge and sell it the next day”, she said.
As they had already run out of space in their fridge at the time, they decided to leave six boxes of leftover curry puffs in their room before refrying it the next day to be sold with a fresh batch. What they didn’t realise was that the filling from the leftover curry puffs had already spoiled during the night.
After confronting the supplier, they’ve admitted their mistakes and the KKM officers have also made their way to the supplier’s central kitchen for a checkup. As of now, Mrs. Razali has shared that her mother is in good condition, while her sister suffered from diarrhea on Friday but has since recovered.
