15yo teen awarded “International Master” title in chess, becomes youngest M’sian to hold the title!

Chess is a strategic board game that has been played for centuries. While it is a game known to many people, Netflix originals Queen’s Gambit has successfully piqued the interest of many towards chess. Participating in the 8th East Asian Youth Chess Championship (EAYCC), 15-year-old chess prodigy, Poh Yu Tian has displayed exceptional skills!

15yo teen awarded “International Master” title in chess, the youngest M’sian to hold the title

According to the Malaysian Chess Federation, Poh Yu Tian, a 15-year-old chess prodigy has become the youngest Malaysian to hold the title of “International Master”. This title came after he defeated his opponent, John Dave Lavandero from the Philippines! On top of that, Yu Tian’s victory has also allowed him to gain 2,429 rating.

With his current achievement, Yu Tian not only became the youngest to hold the IM title, but he also became the 10th Malaysian to achieve the title! His previous accomplishments include winning the rapid event and participating in the Blitz event, culminating in the inaugural PMX Cup.

On a similar note, 3 other Malaysian chess players have also displayed excellency in the strategic board game. Ainul Mardhiah a 14-year-old student with autism has clinched the WFM (Women FIDE Master) title, while Chow Yi Chen and Yap Ray Jin has both secured the CM (Candidate Master) title.

However, it’s worth noting that the trio would only be able to officially use their title once they surpass the minimum ratings. Regardless of that, it’s definitely a proud moment for us Malaysians to see the younger generation thrive.
