Zoo Negara recognised by China government as one of the best giant panda caregivers!
According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, Zoo Negara vice president, Rosly@Rahmat Ahmat Lana shared that under their care, the giant panda couple Xing Xing and Liang Liang managed to give birth to three panda cubs in a short period of time. Nuan Nuan who was born in 2015 have been sent back to China back in 2017 while Yiyi and Sheng Yi have returned last night.
“Every year, giant panda experts from China would head over to the zoo to evaluate the living conditions and observe how we care and feed the pandas”, he said.
Following that, the Zoo has also prepared a farewell party of the giant pandas and is glad to see that the pandas have adapted well to Malaysian environment. Comparing the birth rate with other countries, most pandas would take up to 8 years to produce a cub. Rosly explained that while the pandas live together in an enclosure, they would only see each other 3 days a year as they’re solitary animals.
“When it’s mating season, we would monitor them closely and it would usually take about 10 to 15 minutes”, he mentioned.
In order to keep the pandas in good health, the zoo has also allocated five employees to take care of them, providing them with nutritious food and drawing their blood every month to ensure that they’re in good health. When it comes to their dietary restrictions, Rosly shared that their main diet consists of bamboo, bamboo leaves, apples and pears.
“Similar to humans, the pandas aren’t allowed to have too many sugary foods as it could cause them to gain weight and put their health in jeopardy”, he added.
We hope the journey back to China is smooth for the pandas!
