One of the best things about living in Malaysia other than the food our culture and hospitality. And this is especially observed in tight-knit communities such as local neighbourhoods, where it isn’t uncommon to have residents lending each other a hand as and when they need the help.
M’sian shares how lucky she is to have kind elderly neighbours
This was especially exemplified in a post that was recently shared by Asmawati, who spoke about how the kindness of her neighbours surprised her as she opened her front gate, she noticed that her parcel was placed on top of the brick wall they share between their homes.
“Residing in the house onto my left is an elderly Chinese couple. They’ve always helped me collect my parcels and would leave them on top of the brick wall we share.
Whatever the runner sends to my home, my neighbours would collect them”, she said.
Recounting one instance in particular, she shares that there was once when a runner called her to inform that her neighbour had collected her parcel for her, and even sent her a photograph of her neighbour holding the parcel! She then told the runner that it’s fine and that her neighbour will pass the items to her.
“Could you imagine when I buy food for my cat and a pack would be about 8kg? They would still collect it and put it on top of the brick wall we share”, she mentioned.
And despite having told them countless times to leave the heavy parcels on top of the gate because they’re old and she doesn’t want to see them get hurt, her neighbours would insist on helping her all the same. They expressed concern that if it rains, her parcel will get wet and it may potentially damage the goods inside.
“The aunty would always tell me, you come home late and your parcel may be damaged if the runner left it on top of the gate.
And after 2-3 times of purchasing the cat food online, I’ve decided to just purchase from the physical stores itself as I felt guilty for letting them collect such a heavy parcel”, she said.
But her neighbour’s hospitality didn’t just stop there, as apparently when Asmawati does her laundry and leaves them hanging to dry on her gate, her neighbours would proceed to help her collect it before arranging them neatly on the top of the wall.
“They’re very kindhearted and every time I see them, I would always ask if they’ve eaten or if they’re well”, she said.
Speaking to Wau Post, she expressed how touched and grateful she was to have such kind neighbours. And despite the fact they practice different faiths, neighbours would always look out for her all the same.
“Even during Chinese New Year, they would pass me some mandarin oranges and I would return the favour with some fruits and snacks”, she recalled.
Emphasising the importance of racial harmony as we live in a multiracial community, Asmawati said that we should always strive to not just respect but care for one another, regardless of our race or beliefs.
Following her post, many netizens have shared how blessed she is to have nice neighbours and some even shared their experiences.
A netizen commented on how it doesn’t matter what racial ethnicity you are, and that one should always do good.
“I agree with you, I had neighbour who was Chinese back then and they were so nice. They would always remember us and every time they come back from a trip, we would always get souvenirs.”
“It’s a blessing to have good neighbours.”
“How lucky you are to have such kindhearted neighbours. Please send my best regards to both aunty and uncle ya.”
