Having a roof over our heads could be something we always take for granted. Just recently, a family of 7 living in Kampung Baru Sungai Johor has gone viral online, for living in a small hut made with wood and discarded recyclable materials.
M’sian family builds hut out of recyclable items
According to local newspaper Harian Metro, Norazlina mentioned that her husband, Mohd Farid had no choice but to build a small hut for them to live in as they couldn’t afford to rent a house.
“We didn’t want to burden our family, hence we didn’t ask for help”, she said.
Norazlina shared that her husband currently works as a mechanic, but earns a mere RM1,200 monthly. Prior to building their own hut, her husband would have to fork out RM800 monthly to pay for the house that they were staying at. Seeing that a big portion of the money is forked out for rent, they decided it’s best to build their own home using wood and discarded recyclable items.
The mother of five shared that it’s been 2 months since they’ve started living in the hut, revealing that the hut was built on the land owned by her husband’s family.
“We are grateful, at least we have a roof over our heads”, she said, adding that they once had to resort to living in their car as they failed to pay rent.
Government steps in and assist
As the news make waves on social media, Johor’s government was alerted of the issue paid a visit to the family of 7. Upon understanding their living situation, authorities have helped the family by relocating the family to a rental house which is funded by Johor State Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ).
With the help of relevant parties, the family’s life seemed to be returning to normal and they were assisted in terms of purchasing household items and essentials as well.
“I’m thankful for all the support and help I received, now I can focus on ensuring that my children’s future are secured”, said Mohd Farid, adding that he was worried for his family’s safety when living in the hut.
We’re glad to see that things are getting better for him and his family.
