Living in Malaysia, our sidewalks are usually filled with lush greenery. After retiring, Uncle Andrew, affectionately known as Lavendrew, has decided to spice things up around his neighbourhood, utilising the sidewalks and planting beautiful flowers.
This M’sian uncle decides to spice up the sidewalks by planting beautiful flowers
According to a post by storyteller Patrick Lee, he shared a video about a sidewalk gardener named Andrew. According to Uncle Andrew, his passion for growing plants stem from the fact that he wanted to be occupied after retiring. After his house ran out of space for his gardening, he then decided to make use of the sidewalks outside of his house.
Over 12 years ago, Uncle Andrew explained that there was nothing on his sidewalks and there was only a pathway, filled with rubbish thrown all around it.
“After cleaning the rubbish, I began planting and I do everything by hand”, he said.
Don’t forget to slow down and smell the flowers
Despite being 80, Uncle Andrew would still work on his sidewalk garden with minimal assistance. From sweeping the floor to weeding the garden and trimming the bushes, Uncle Andrew made sure he did it all manually.
Based on his observation, he realised that a handful of people would often litter at places which are empty. In an attempt to also stop people from littering, he decided to plant flowers along the sidewalks.
“Our city likes to focus on big and tall buildings, but I find that people love to be in green spaces. Nature can really calm you down, especially in big cities”, added Uncle Andrew.
Andrew, Uncle Andrew, Laven-drew
Receiving compliments from people about how well kept his sidewalk gardens are, Uncle Andrew quickly earned the nickname Laven-drew. An adorable wordplay on the flowers Lavender and his name Andrew. When asked why, he joyfully shared that the people in the neighbourhood would often joke around with him, due to the Lavender-coloured flowers he planted.
Ending the interview, he said,
“I don’t see myself as someone special, I’m just trying to bring a little bit of green beauty to my neighbourhood and city.”
Thank you, Uncle Andrew, for your effort, we’re delighted to see the flowers at your sidewalk bloom beautifully, under your careful watch and nurturing.
