Just over the weekend, news broke out that a SPM graduate named Syahril has lost his mother to cancer a day after results have been announced. Prior to this, when Syahril who is the youngest amongst his other siblings would rush home immediately after school to take care of his bedridden mother.
SPM top scorer receives various scholarship offers from agencies and NGOs
As his father had passed on 7 years ago, Syahril and his siblings began depending on each other and in 2019, their mother was diagnosed with cancer. As he had to take care of his mother was critically ill, Syahril had no choice but to forgo the idea of heading to school and collecting his SPM exam slip.
As the school found out that he was unable to attend due to his mother’s condition, they decided to send a few teachers over to his home and gave him a surprise. After his teacher’s visit, Syahril was said to have scored 11A’s in his examinations and when asked about his plans, he mentioned that he’d like to be a lecturer.
Following his story, various agencies and NGOs who were aware of his story has reached out to him, offering him scholarships that he can chose from. According to local newspaper NST, Syahril has yet to decided which scholarship offer he would take on but is certain he’d want to weigh all his options before deciding.
“I will perform a special prayer so that I can make a wise decision and discuss with my family on what to do next”, he said.
Syahril then expressed his gratitude to those who has reached out wanting to help and would like to clear the air mentioning that his siblings were equally as responsible for their mother as he was. Syahril hopes that the locals wouldn’t misunderstand thinking that he is the only one taking care of his mother.
