Throughout the years, plenty of shelters have been established in hopes of ensuring the welfare of the strays. With the increasing number of strays, shelters established can only take in a limited number of animals as they would have to make sure that each stray is well taken care of.

Selangor govt considers banning the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores

In the recent Selangor Management of Stray Dogs Forum 2023, state executive councilor Ng Sze Han revealed that the Selangor govt is looking into implementing a ban for the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores. This initiative would further encourage locals who are thinking of having furry companions to adopt instead of shopping for one.

Ng shared that as of now, they’re still finalising the details in banning the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores and emphasised that pet stores can sell pet food and other necessities to maintain their business.

“In my constituency Kinrara, we have a weekly pet adoption drive outside the IOI mall and roughly 20 pets are adopted on a monthly basis”, he added, saying that these initiatives can help reduce the pet abandonment rate.

Following that, Ng mentioned that the state government highly encourages local councils to use the netting method when catching strays as it is deemed as more humane. However, the looping method can still be applicable when trying to rescue strays from tight spots like being under vehicles and drains.

Moreover, according to local newspaper The Star, the Selangor government is also at its final stage of finalising the plan of establishing an international-standard Fur shelter on a 1.2-hectare plot land at the borders of Subang Jaya, near Cyberjaya. The shelter would be suitable for both dogs and cats, along with a dog park.

“It would also serve as an education hub for locals to better understand strays”, said Ng.

Lastly, Ng mentioned that the government is short of funds for animal welfare but the Fur Shelter that will be established aims to not only promote the idea of adopting but also raise awareness and raise funds through sustainable activities.
