SEA games 2023: Malaysia bags 4 gold medals and 19 medals in total at Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The SEA games also known as the Southeast Asian games is a multisport event that is hosted biannually. This year, the sports event is hosted by Cambodia and takes place from 5 May to 17 May 2023. With that said, the event features athletes from over 11 Southeast Asian countries, competing in various sport events.

More than 650 athletes from Malaysia participating in the 32nd SEA Games this year

Prior to this, Athletes from Malaysia have managed to bring home a total of 174 medals, with 39 gold medals, 45 silver medals and 90 bronze medals respectively from the previous SEA games that was hosted in Hanoi, Vietnam. According to local newspaper, New Straits Times has reported that Malaysia’s target for the multisport event would remain at 40 gold medals along with 37 silver medals and 64 bronze medals.

Since the beginning of the SEA games, Malaysia is off to a good start with Wan Athirah Hidayah Ahmad Fuzli winning the first bronze medal in the women’s obstacle race. On that note, C Sharmalarani who competed in the kumite karate category has secured Malaysia’s first gold medal!

As of now, athletes from Malaysia have won a total of 19 medals which consists of 4 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. Of the 19 medals the athletes have bagged to date, all 4 gold medals were achieved in the karate event, while 6 of the silver medals are from mountain bike, obstacle race, karate, Pencak silat martial arts, cricket, and eSports. The 9 bronze medals are from obstacle race, karate, swimming, Chinlone, Ju-jitsu, and Khun Khmer martial arts.
