If there is anything that the world could use more of these days, it has to be kindness, compassion, and empathy. That is readily apparent in how a Penang nasi lemak seller recently won over the hearts of local social media users after going out of her way to lend a much-needed hand to an elderly uncle who frequented her stall.
Penang nasi lemak seller helps out elderly uncle who buys food from her stall
As shared by TikTok user and small business owner Ciksuegebu, she explains how she had gotten to know an elderly Chinese senior citizen who would often frequent the area where her stall was located and buy food from her. After learning about his impoverished circumstances at home, she often made a point of providing him with small tokens of financial aid to get by.
But lately, Cik Sue said she noticed that the uncle had resorted to walking to her stall on foot instead of riding his bicycle as he usually does to get there. Surprised, she proceeded to ask him what had happened to his bicycle, and was told by the uncle that it was broken.
Despite that fact, the uncle still depended on the use of his bicycle’s baskets to help him carry his items around Penang, and was seen pushing the bicycle along busy streets. Her conversation with the uncle led to many netizens asking her to set-up a fundraiser for the uncle, so that they may contribute to buying him a new bicycle.
Eventually thanks to help from the generous public, she managed to collect a total of RM400 that went towards the new bicycle!
A brand-new bicycle delivered
Unfortunately the first time they attempted to deliver the bicycle to him at his home, they weren’t able to find him. But Cik Sue and her husband did run into him later, and managed to surprise him with the bicycle that they had kept in the trunk of their car.
“Bagi saya ah? [This is for me?]” he could be heard asking in surprise.
“Bagi uncle lah! [Yes! This is for you, uncle].” she said in response.
Appearing shocked and taken aback, the elderly uncle then appeared to be reaching into his shirt pocket for money to pay Cik Sue for the price of the bicycle. Cik Sue reassured him that she had wanted to gift him the bicycle for free, and even helped to move it over to his home!
Upon arriving, the uncle’s neighbours helped to translate Cik Sue’s well wishes to him in Cantonese, to which he responded by inviting Cik Sue and her husband into his modest home for tea as a token of his appreciation for their kindness and generosity.
In speaking with WauPost, Cik Sue said that she has known the uncle for six years since 2017 as he would come by to buy food from her. In fact just over Chinese New Year, she even gifted him a brand-new set of clothes!
Netizens have since commended Cik Sue for going above and beyond to help the elderly man.
“May you and those who helped others always be blessed!”
“Thank you for spreading good!”
To Cik Sue and the netizens who chipped in for the uncle’s bicycle, thank you for making the world a better place!
