Regardless of one’s choice, one shouldn’t be judged solely based on their occupation. Just recently, a Malaysian man has gone viral on social media for his choice of occupation as a sanitation worker.
20yo M’sian works as sanitation worker to help support his family
According to a video that went viral on TikTok, a Malaysian man named Wan Othman revealed that he currently works as a sanitation worker for Alam Flora. Prior to this, Othman had decided to drop out of school at the age of 14 and became a restaurant waiter. He later became a tow truck worker along with his dad before changing his occupation to become a sanitation worker, in hopes of supporting his family.
Following his story, Othman shared that he’s been working in Alam Flora for the past 2 years and is happy with his job. Other than that, he would also occasionally upload footages of him at work, highlighting his dedication and happiness for his job.
“There’s nothing to be ashamed of working here”, he said.
In hopes of a better future for his siblings
Speaking to Wau Post, Othman revealed that the reason he decided to drop out was because he wanted to help his family. Growing up in a family with four siblings, he wasn’t the only one in the family that made the decision to drop out. His older sister also dropped out when she was 16 and the both of them have decided to look for jobs to help support their family.
“We have two younger siblings, and we want them to have better education and opportunities. Hence, we decided to drop out and give them the opportunity”, he mentioned.
While he understood that working as a sanitation worker may bring him some form of backlash or criticism from the public, he remains proud of his occupation.
“I’m earning money the right way, I’m able to support my family, bring my family out for dinner and allow my sisters to study in peace, I really am happy”, he stated.
He added that he didn’t expect that his video would blow up as he was only sharing his daily life updates.
“Since it’s garnering attention, I hope I’m able to inspire other people and reassure them that one shouldn’t feel ashamed of their job”, he said.
All the best in your future endeavours Othman, we hope your siblings would grow up happily!
