Back in 2004, the national service also known as Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (PLKN) was introduced to Malaysians. Subsequently in 2018, the programme was abolished and replaced with a youth leadership programme during the Pakatan Harapan administration.

According to local newspaper MalayMail, defence minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan revealed that the national service programme will be making a comeback soon. However, as compared to the previous training module, a new and improved programme will be introduced instead.

“As compared to our previous module, cur current proposal for the national service training session would only last 45 days”, he said, adding that the training would be conducted in 13 different army camps and 1 police camp.

Phase 2 will involve Malaysians aged 15 to 35

Following the new module, it was reported that the training would include 3 phases, with phase 1 being at school level with the involvement at uniform units under co-curricular activities. Phase 2 would be the 45-day intensive training programme and this would involve Malaysians aged 16 to 35. After the 45-day training, trainees would then be approached by agencies in phase 3.

“We want positive returns”

Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan also elaborated that the 45-day camp would focus mainly on military-style identity building. He also shared that the module that they’re planning to implement is in reference to training programmes held in Singapore and Korea.

“The trainers for the programme are also ready”, he mentioned.

Looking at the paperwork presented, the government is estimated to only spend less than RM100 million annually for the new programme, as compared to previous years where RM500 million was spent annually.

All in all, the main purpose in reviving the national service programme is to instill patriotism and produce youths that possesses quality and discipline.
