Public transport often considered to be a great boon to those living in the city, as it helps people commute around without having to endure traffic congestion, while also reducing pollution emitted by vehicles on the road. And in this regard, Malaysia has been hard at work to continue improving public transport infrastructure to ensure that it can meet the needs of Malaysians, including the introduction of new transit lines.

And in line with that, it has been announced that the Putrajaya MRT will officially be open for public use today, is expected to be fully operational by 3pm. In an effort to encourage more users to try out the newly debuted MRT line, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that free rides will be given to all MRT users who will be using the Putrajaya line.

The Putrajaya MRT line will be the country’s second MRT line, and will be capable of ferry up to 104,000 passengers daily, covering a span of 36 stations from Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral. The line also offers 10 interchanges and connecting stations like Ampang Park, Titiwangsa, and Sungai Besi.

Following its initial launch, the Putrajaya line will operate from 6.00am to midnight daily, in light of helping to sooth congestion on highways like Maju Expressway and Sungai Besi Expressway that leads to the city centre. The train is expected to have a frequency of 4 to 6 minutes during non-peak hours, 7 to 10 minutes during peak hours, and 7-15 minutes on weekends and public holidays.

The ride fares will only commence on April 1st with Touch ‘N Go users being charged a flat rate fee if they used their card for both riding the MRT and parking their cars at stations with Park & Ride facilities on the same day. 17 stations offer Park & Ride facilities, with a total of 6,416 parking bays. The charge is RM4.30 per entry per day.

For non MRT- users, please note that you will be charged hourly with a starting fee of RM3.30 for the first hour and subsequently RM1.10 for every hour and a maximum charge of RM16.10 a day if you choose to park at these facilities.
