For the longest time, the prospect of self-driving cars has often been considered to be a far-fetched science fiction fantasy that exists only in television shows and movies.
But with the advent of modern technology, such features are no longer relegated to the annals of make-believe, as cars today inch ever closer to a fully autonomous future. With that said, given the technology’s infancy, not all counties have made it legal to operate cars in autopilot mode. And this also includes Malaysia.
M’sian influencer snaps video of BF sleeping while driving on autopilot
On Monday, a female Malaysian content creator posted a video via Instagram Stories of her boyfriend driving them to Ipoh, only with a dangerous twist. As reported by local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, the woman showed how her partner was sitting in the driver’s seat with his eyes closed. What’s more, his arms were not on the steering wheel and his legs were also not on the accelerator as well.
Apparently, she had been trying to show how the autopilot feature of their BMW was capable of keeping the vehicle in control, despite a lack of input from her boyfriend behind the wheel.
While many cars have slowly adopted the concept of autonomous driving, the use of the feature in Malaysia hands free was banned by the local police when a Singaporean Tesla driver made a similar attempt last year from Johor to Penang using Autopilot.
Concerns have continued to mount over the reliance on autopilot functions in cars, as according to a study published by the MIT it has been found that the feature could potentially divert the attention of the driver, reducing their awareness of road conditions.
Following that, China Press reports that Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Bassan Basri has instructed JPJ to detain the couple for further investigations in connection to the video if they’re still in Ipoh.
Netizens have also been critical of the couple’s actions for bragging about the car’s autonomous driving capabilities, and pointed out how it could endanger the lives of other road users.
“This is the consequence of bragging too much, leading you to your demise.”
“You’re an influencer and you should use your platform to spread accurate information to the netizens on how to be safe on the road. There’s still risks when it comes to autopilot mode.”
“This is what happens when you brag too much.”
“They’ll have chicken rice in Ipoh and then curry rice in the police station.”
“This is what happens when you brag too much about what you have.”
