35yo M’sian climbs Mount Kinabalu while wearing her traditional Dusun Kimaragang attire
Just recently, a woman named Sheryll has shared her hiking journey onto her socials. In her post she shared that she has managed to climb to the peak of Mount Kinabalu, with her traditional attire. She mentioned that it was her third time attempting to climb Mount Kinabalu and was very thankful that she had managed to reach the peak without much hindrance.
Speaking to Wau Post, Sheryll revealed that despite it being the third time conquering the hike, it wasn’t easy due to the cold. She said that her biggest challenge was the cold but regardless of it, she was persistent and managed to reach the peak. Sheryll said that she had to wear thick clothing to keep herself warm during the climb and only changed into her traditional attire, which is the Dusun Kimaragang to commemorate her achievements when she reached the peak.
When asked about what her traditional attire means to her, Sheryl said,
“It reminds me of my roots.”
She added on saying that there are plenty of ethnic groups in Sabah and it’s important for her to remember and honour her roots. Sheryll shared that the traditional outfit she wore is a symbol of the existence of her ancestors and this is her humble attempt in trying to keep her culture and roots alive. As she posted pictures of her in her traditional attire, she mentioned that she didn’t expect for the pictures to go viral.
“It was a reminder to myself of how beautiful my culture is and I’m happy to see other people appreciating it”, she mentioned.
Thank you for sharing your journey, Sheryll! Your traditional attire is stunning!
