Hailing from Jeli, Kelantan, Mohd Zaini Zawawi who currently resides in Penang shares how he is able to earn a living by selling petai! “I would usually acquire peeled beans as it can be kept longer as compared to the ones that aren’t peeled”, he said.

With that said, Zawawi is able to procure up to 300kg worth of stink beans each time and sell them at a price of RM30-60 depending on the scarcity of the beans. He mentioned that during abundance season, he would price his beans at RM30 per kilograms but if there’s a higher demand in the market, he would then increase the price to RM60 per kilogram.

“When I have adequate supply in my inventory, I would usually sell them at a lower price, which attracts many buyers as my competitors would usually sell theirs at a standard RM60 per kilogram”, he explained.

When asked about spoilage or wastage, Zawawi shared that the beans he procured can usually last up to three to four days as long as it’s kept properly. Along with his strategy to ensure that he doesn’t run out of supply, Zawawi’s business is often supported by restaurants and small businesses that would buy his stink beans in a bulk.

What an incredible way to earn a living and we hope his business continues to run smoothly!
