Given the proliferation of crime that can strike at any time or place, we are often advised to keep our wits about us to avoid falling victim to bad actors who are intent on making a quick buck through malicious means. And this is especially true when it comes down to making sure that you don’t leave any visible belongings in your parked car, as this father goes on to remind others.

M’sian father returns to his car, discovers it was broken into by thief

In a rather unfortunate turn of events, local netizen @irfannhaziq_ recently took to recounting the frightening ordeal that him and his family have experienced, after they found out that their car had been broken into while it was left parked in the basement of a popular shopping mall located in Kuala Lumpur. Based upon images that were shared to Irfan’s Twitter profile, the left side of his car’s rear quarter window was smashed open in a bid to get the car door open.

With glass shards littering the backseat, it appears that his baby’s diaper bag that was left in the backseat had been the most obvious target and was thoroughly ransacked by the thief, who had likely assumed that it contained valuables. Thankfully, all it contained was an assortment of infant-care essentials and nothing more.

Don’t leave bags in the backseat, M’sians reminded

In speaking with WauPost, Irfan said that the incident had taken place last Saturday (October 29th, 2022), when he parked his car at around 8.15pm before returning to it at 10.00pm. After making the discovery, he subsequently informed the mall’s management on the matter, and was then advised to lodge a police report. As a consequence of the break-in, he wound up having to pay RM150 to have the window pane replaced in his car.

“I didn’t lose anything because I did not leave any laptop or cash in the bag.

The culprit just ransacked my son’s diaper bag, but he didn’t take anything. Maybe he was frustrated.” he said.

However, it would seem that he was not the only victim that evening as another netizen would message him privately to inform that his car was also broken into by a thief in the same parking basement. Unfortunately in their case, his wife wound up losing her company laptop.

His Tweet, which has since gone viral, has led to many other netizens sharing similar experiences and reminding others never to leave anything on the car seat to avoid turning their vehicles into potential targets.

“This is what I argued with my friend who said ‘People who want to steal they’ll steal your car outright, they won’t just break the window for a laptop’.

It’s not about whether you have a laptop or not. The moment they break your window, you’re going to have to go through the trouble of paying for a new one. What you lose is another matter entirely. So don’t leave your bag in your car, please.”

“That’s right, my mother-in-law’s car has also fallen victim to this while parked outside a tomyam stall along MRR2. After maghrib. And yet all it was in the backseat was just a child’s schoolbag. So, don’t leave any bags in your car.”
