M’sian mother travels over 300km weekly on motorbike to sell vegetables so she could support her children

In an attempt to support her 10-year-old child, Malaysian mother Siti Norol Salwani Ismail has decided to start a small business selling vegetables. With a motor bike as her mode of transport, the hardworking mother would then travel over hundreds of kilometre to Kuala Lumpur, just to sell her vegetables.

According to local newspaper NST, Siti’s idea of selling vegetables stem from an incident where she was charged an exorbitant amount when purchasing vegetables at a store in Cheras. Realising that she is able to get fresh vegetable at a cheaper rate in her hometown, Siti decided to embark on her journey.

After picking vegetables like petai, ubi, Brazilian spinach, broad beans, other vegetables and fruits like nangka and soursop, she would then travel over 100 kilometres to Kuala Lumpur and sell the fresh produces.

“It’s definitely tiring at first, especially when my mode of transport is the motorbike”, she said.

Determined to make it work, Siti persevered and managed to garner support from the locals. She added that her vegetables are quite popular amongst the community because her produces are fresher.

Sticks and stones may break her bike, but not her spirits

When asked about the challenges faces, Siti shared that she is no different from others. Aside from bad weather, the frequent long-distance travels have caused her bike to break down. Sometimes, she might even wound up with a punctured tyre.

“It’s inevitable, but the challenges are worth it as I’m able to earn a living to support my child and buy a new and sturdier bike!”, she said.

Sharing that she has recently got married again, she expressed her gratitude towards her current husband for supporting her little venture. In fact, her husband is so supportive of her business that he intends to help her wherever he can!

As of now, Siti’s plan remains the same where she would pick fresh vegetables from Changat Jering and rides her motorcycle all the way to Cheras to sell them.

We’re happy to see things working out for you Siti! All the best!
