M’sian man forced to live in his car after falling victim to investment scam, works hard to pay off debt

Having it all at the peak of your life is a rewarding feeling unlike any other. Unfortunately, not all good things are meant to last forever. What really matters though, is how we bounce back from such hardships.

The literal definition of success, Ariff Luqman Peter Lisut was previously a millionaire in the making. He was a young man in his 20s owning a substantial business, with a house and expensive cars to boot. However, all that was gone in a split second when he was caught in an investment scam.

Fast forward seven years today, the 27-year-old man now lives in his car, hustling to make ends meet. According to New Straits Times, Ariff met with misfortune in a cryptocurrency investment sham two years back. This left him with a RM1 million debt, forcing him to sell his business and three cars in order to compensate his clients.

That was when Ariff decided to work odd jobs in order to recover his finances. He began taking up jobs like cleaning houses, copywriting, creating video and posters, as well as running deliveries.

“Even though I sold off all my assets, it wasn’t enough to cover the debt, so I took on various jobs to pay off the remaining amount. That’s why I don’t rent a house or a room because my burden is too heavy,” he told the paper. Ariff now calls his car his home, and showers at gas station restrooms.

Ariff’s TikTok video showcasing his day-to-day went viral, as he works tirelessly to settle his debt. “It’s alright, I would rather live in hardship paying off my debt instead of living lavishly but full of debt,” his caption reads. Ariff hopes the video could act as a channel to reach potential job employers and work his way back to the top.

It’s truly motivating to see Ariff’s spirit keep him going. We wish him all the best and pray that no one else may fall victim to similar situations.
