M’sian lawyer recounts his unforgettable encounter 25 years ago
Recently, a Tiktok user recounted an event which has stuck by him for years. Ahmad Zaharil, who has been a lawyer for 31 years, shared a video which detailed a fateful encounter back in 1998.
One day as he exited the courtroom, Ahmad came across a woman in handcuffs. Curious, he inquired about her situation, to which she replied that she had been apprehended for theft. The mother had promised her son a pencil box as a reward for achieving the top position for his exams. But as she was unable to afford the RM18 pencil box, she resorted to stealing it instead.

After clarifying the incident with the school principal, Ahmad offered to defend her in court for free. Fortunately, he was able to lighten her sentence to just several years in probation.
But that was not the end of it. 19 years later, Ahmad could not help but notice a young man staring at him in the court canteen. After a while, the man finally approached Ahmad and introduced himself as the son of the lady he helped all those years ago!
“He told me that he was now a lawyer too,” Ahmad said in the post. Ahmad recalls being so stunned with disbelief until it brought him to tears. To this day, he keeps in touch with the man and his mother on a regular basis.
Ahmad’s good deed earns praise from netizens
The video has sparked positive feedback from online users, with many commending Ahmad’s compassion and kindness. If not for Ahmad, the fate of the mother and son might not have turned out the way it has. One user wrote, “Imagine if the mother had gone to jail, how different things would have been. God bless you, sir.”
Another person pointed out that not many lawyers would have gone to the same extent, what more to represent someone for free. “You helped the mom for free, yet you received the most valuable ‘payment'”, one user said.
It’s always heartwarming to see good things find their way back to people. After all, what goes around comes around!
