For many parents, the prospect of seeing their children hurt or in mortal danger is perhaps one of the most unfathomably harrowing fates to bear. Tragically, this would be the reality that a 49-year-old ambulance driver was confronted with when he recently responded to a car accident in the state of Terengganu.
Ambulance driver responds to fatal crash, realises victim is his own son
As reported by local newspaper The New Straits Times, Mohd Taqwa Ismail had been informed of the incident that took place along Km38 Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kota Baru on Sunday (November 6th, 2022) at 4.30pm in the afternoon. Working as an ambulance driver for the Sungai Tong Health Clinic, he was instructed to collect the body of the victim, before transporting it over to Setiu Hospital.
However upon his arrival, Taqwa suddenly felt a sense of dreadful premonition fill his heart. At that moment, he noticed a motorbike that had toppled onto its side on the ground and immediately recognised it as belonging to his 21-year-old son, Muhammad Aiman.
Victim perished at the scene from severe head injuries
Having only worked for five months under the landscape unit of Taman Tamadan Islam (TTI), Aiman was involved in a fatal accident with a lorry that afternoon. According to Setiu police chief Deputy Superintendent Afandi Hussin, the young man perished at the scene of the crash after sustaining severe head injuries.
He was believed to have been travelling back to his home in Sungai Tong from Kuala Nerus, before the crash occurred. On the other hand, the driver of the lorry did not sustain any injuries.
“Aiman, who was riding a Honda EX5, was said to have tried to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the lorry which was coming from the opposite direction.” said Afandi.
Recalling some of their last moments spent together, Taqwa said that his late-son would usually bring food to work with him, but decided to stay home to have dinner the day before. Prior to that, Taqwa managed to fry some fish that he had brought back with him from a trip, which Aiman ate and proceeded to ask to keep some for later.
His father described him as being a quiet but popular individual who could adapt to any situation. Aiman was the second of five children in his family, and was buried at the Felda Belara Muslim cemetery on Monday (November 7th, 2022).
“In the 21 years I have worked as an ambulance driver, that was the first time I had been faced with a situation involving a family member. Only Allah knows the sorrow I felt at the time,” said Taqwa.
The case will now be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
