The Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) is a biennial multi-sport event involving athletes from Southeast Asian countries. The games are governed by the Southeast Asian Games Federation, with supervision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). After a successful game at Cambodia back in 2023, Malaysia has officially accepted the offer to host the next SEA games in 2027!
Malaysia to host 2027 SEA Games!
According to an announcement made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), it was reported that the Malaysia Cabinet has unanimously provided support to accept the offer to host the 2027 SEA Games.
Chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the decision to accept the offer came after several states, including Penang, Sabah and Sarawak. The 3 states have expressed their readiness to support the upcoming games, by co-hosting and committing their resources into the games with Kuala Lumpur.
On a similar note, the government has also extended its congratulatory notes to the Sarawak government for successfully organizing the Malaysia games (SUKMWith that said, the Malaysia government is fully confident that the upcoming 2027 SEA Games will be successfully hosted as it’ll mark the 7th time Malaysia is hosting the games.
Prior to this, Malaysia has hosted 6 SEA Games which includes:
- 1965 – Kuala Lumpur (4th SEA Games)
- 1971 – Kuala Lumpur (6th SEA Games)
- 1977 – Kuala Lumpur (9th SEA Games)
- 1989 – Kuala Lumpur (15th SEA Games)
- 2001 – Kuala Lumpur (21st SEA Games)
- 2017 – Kuala Lumpur (29th SEA Games)
The 2017 edition of SEA Games was particularly notable as it coincided with Malaysia’s 60th anniversary of independence. Following their acceptance of the 2027 SEA Games, it’s reported that it will too, be a memorable one as it’ll coincide with Malaysia’s 70th anniversary of independence!
