Traditional kites, known as “wau” in Malaysia, hold a significant cultural and artistic value. The term “wau” is derived from the Malay word for kite. These traditional kites are not just objects of recreation but are deeply rooted in Malaysian heritage. Just recently, Mrs Malaysia World P. Vanishaantini has stunned the crowd by wearing the biggest ‘wau’ costume!
Mrs Malaysia World 2023 stuns crowd with ‘wau’ costume
According to local newspaper New Straits Times, Mrs Malaysia World 2023, P. Vanishaantini decided to stun the crowds in Las Vegas, by wearing the biggest wau (kite) costume. Designed by Saran Anak Lagong, the wau costume was said to be over 3.8m high and 4.8m wide!
Speaking to local newswire agency, Bernama, Vanishaantini aged 27 shared that to be able don the costume, she has gone through physical training.
“I have to prepare myself because the costume weighs about 10kg”, she said.
When asked about her routine, she shares that she’s been practicing her catwalk since March, while taking care of her health. As she preps herself, she shared that she is very excited to wear the costume as it gives her the chance to not only put Malaysia on the map but to also showcase the intricate local craftmanship.
Taking it up a notch, her costume has successfully entered into the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest wau costume, at an event held at a hotel! As of now, Vanishaantini is set to wear the costume at Las Vegas this month!
