Just today, local newswire agency Bernama has reported that Malaysia has been offered the opportunity by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
Malaysia to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026?
This news was first announced after the Australian state, Victoria, has decided to not host the games due to the high surge in costing. It was reported that the state’s initial expectation of the cost was set at AUD2.6 billion but was then increased to AUD7.2 billion. Following its withdrawal, the state is reported to have to pay a fine of AUD380 million for the breach of contract.
Subsequently, a statement released by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) revealed that the offer was presented to Malaysia and reprises an initial RM601 million ($100 Million pounds) financial investment, to help facilitate the planning and execution of the 2026 edition.

Along with the formal invitation by CGF to OCM, discussions have commenced with the youth and sports ministry in regard to the possibility of Malaysia hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games. OCM president, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria revealed their two cents, encouraging the government to take up the deal as it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity.
“With existing world-class facilities, Malaysia is well-equipped to host the game, accommodating over 74 Commonwealth nation and territories”, he added.
Youth and sports minister, Hannah Yeoh shared that the decision will be made in parliament soon and they’re in the midst of preparing a cabinet paper which includes various reports and studies of organising the event.
For those who are unfamiliar, Malaysia was the first Asian country to host the Commonwealth Games back in 1998, which was over 2 decades ago.
