Houses of worship, whether they be mosques, churches, or temples, tend to typically be associated with activities that revolve around one’s faith, such as prayer sessions or classes related to religious education. But on the other hand, these places also typically act as places of learning, providing a space for people living in a particular area to come together and gain new knowledge.

A mosque in Bangsar recently came to exemplify that fact after hosting a lecture on their grounds, and has won high praise across local social media.

The talk could be seen being led by a Sikh doctor, who was seated behind a table explaining the adverse effects of smoking as a few men listened on. According to Saify, the event was held last Friday (April 7th, 2023) at the Saidina Abu Bakar Mosque, in conjunction with the Holy Month of Ramadan.

“It was a well timed topic on how Ramadhan is the best month to quit smoking and he [the doctor] offered to help.” he said.

A reminder of the ‘golden age of Islam’

Saify further adds that while lectures conducted in mosques are not unusual in itself, their topics tend to revolve more around matters of the faith. But the Bangsar mosque’s decision to include a broader range of topics had also reminded him of the ‘golden age of Islam’, when mosques also served as palaces for knowledge.

In that vein, he hopes that more mosques across the country would follow suit and bring in experts from their respective fields, regardless of their faith, to teach.

“This is how we can attract people to go to the masjid. A place of worship and knowledge.” he said.

The move has been warmly received by local social media users, many whom commended the mosque for practicing interfaith harmony.
