For many people, collecting cars could be seen as a hobby especially when it comes to car models from the early days. However, this hobby could easily be an expensive hobby as cars require regular maintenance. Just recently, a British man’s passion for Malaysian-made cars has become the talk of the town!
British man hunts for early model Proton cars, says that it’s durable and stands out
According to local newspaper Harian Metro, Jon Coupland has developed a passion for collecting Proton cars years ago and to date, Jon proudly owns more than 6 different models of Proton cars. When asked about his journey in collecting the Malaysian-made cars, Jon shared that he had stumbled upon a website that sells cars.
“I saw an advertisement for the Proton Saga 1.5 and it immediately piqued my interest”, he said.
Without thinking twice, Jon bought the car from the website and thus, the beginning of his car collecting hobby. He also shared that the model he bought was a Proton Saga 1.5 SE LE 1990 UK Special Edition and was delighted to find the car in excellent condition with only 48,000 kilometres in it.
“It was definitely a steal because it was in great condition and I only acquired it with $700 pounds (RM4,101)”, he mentioned.
Following his journey, Jon told the Maily daily that he would always go on a hunt for early Proton models in the UK because of how distinct they are, and how they offer a different experience and story.
Collecting cars like they’re infinity stones
To add onto his impressive car resume, Jon shares that he always had a knack for the Saga and Iswara as it offers a unique design that sets it apart from other European cars. When asked about his car maintenance, Jon said that he was lucky as his father is a mechanic that specialises in Proton models.
“With over 50 years of experience, my dad helps me keep my collection in shape”, he said.
Determined to keep the car as close to the original model, Jon revealed that sourcing for the spare parts is relatively easy, but to match the interior and exterior accessories becomes quite a challenge as it’s hard to track it down. As he shares his passion for Malaysian-made cars online, he is happy to be able to receive opinion and perspective from Malaysians, giving him better insight.
Dreams of opening a Proton museum in the UK
To no surprise, one of Jon’s dream is to be able to visit the Proton car factory in Tanjong Malim, Perak, as well as the museum in Subang Jaya. He hopes that when he is able to make it to Malaysia, he would be able to source for other spare parts easily and bring it back to the UK.
“I even have the dream to open a museum to showcase my collectibles”, he added.
As of now, Jon’s daily commute vehicle is a white Proton Saga Iswara, and his other models are reserved for special occasions such as roadshows and special events.
It’s great to see people appreciating Malaysian-made cars, especially the early models! Keep up the passion Jon!
