“I want to serve my country”, 25yo M’sian becomes first Chinese to qualify for the 12-week commando course

In a recent display of patriotism, a 25-year-old Malaysian man has made headlines, after completing and passing his 12-week commando course! With his determination and grit, Second Lieutenant Chan Ming Youn from the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (2 RRD) becomes the only Chinese to have pass the commando course.

Born and raised in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, Chan had completed his degree in Accounting, before making the bold move to join the army. Prior to completing his commando course, he mentioned that he was serving in the 515 Territorial Army.

“I didn’t even know anything about commandos when I started serving in the 515 Territorial Army, but that initial step introduced me to the military scene”, he said.

Awarded with the coveted green beret and a commando knife during a parade at Bertutu Laut Beach, Sungai Udang, Melaka last Sunday, Commander of the Special Operations Group (21 GGK) Mej Gen Adi Ridzwan Abdullah reminded them that wearing the green beret is a symbol of competence and professionalism.

“I want to serve my country!”

As Special Force Operators, he further reminded the new commandos that they should always avoid misconducts and keep the dignity of the green beret.

Becoming one of the nine officers to complete and pass the program, Chan engaged in conversation with Mej Gen Adi Ridzwan Abdullah, where he was asked why he decided to join the force. And to that, Chan replied saying.

“I want to serve my country!”

Intending to serve the country and specialize further, Chan’s goal for himself in his military journey would be nothing less of a quality commando.
