In less than a week’s time, Malaysians across the country will be partaking in the celebrations that come along with the Lunar Chinese New Year, which is set to begin this coming Sunday. As one can expect, major shopping centres nationwide have been quick to take the cue and have decked their spaces in lashings of auspicious red, yellow, and gold to welcome shoppers during the festivities.

Local mall’s CNY mannequin sends shivers down spines

With that said, one local mall has recently raised more than just a few eyebrows with their choice in decor and lighting. As shared by local radio personality and 988 DJ Chan Fong 陳峰, Wangsa Walk Mall had also gotten in the Lunar Chinese New Year spirit by switching up their atrium by festooning it with appropriately themed ornamental decorations.

However, their choice of centerpiece to greet visitors at the main entrance leading into the mall has inspired more tingles down spines than merriment and cheer. Stepping into the mall past an entrance adorned with Chinese lanterns, Chan immediately pans the camera towards a hauntingly positioned mannequin dressed in a green cheongsam with a disheveled, long-haired wig that obscured much of its face.

The mannequin’s eerie vibe was only further accentuated by a spotlight that shone upwards from the bottom, leading to unsettling shadows being cast across its unblinking face.

“What is this? How terrifying!” he could be heard saying.

Preparing for Hungry Ghost Month?

The short clip has since gone viral across the local social media space, with many netizens equal parts amused, confused, and mortified by the mall’s ill-thought out choice in decor.

“Chinese New Year hasn’t arrived yet, and yet it seems that the Hungry Ghost Month is already here.”

“How creepy! All they need to do is change the mannequin’s clothes, and they can reuse her for Halloween. That’s economical!”

One netizen claims that the mannequin’s hairstyle has been changed since the video went viral.

“She now has her hair tied up.”
