A retired Malaysian lecturer has recently made headlines for his act of kindness by going around Malaysia and setting up English workshops for primary students in rural areas.

According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, a Malaysian lecturer Lee Chen Fa (transliterated) has served in a local university for over 20 years is now on a mission to help students in the rural areas. Upon retiring back in 2014 and starting his venture in 2016, Lee gladly shared that he has visited over 100 schools around Malaysia, providing the students with English workshops for free!

He shared that his workshops in the schools would usually last for 2 days and covers simple yet effective methods to help the students grasp the concept of English. When asked why he’s offering workshops for free, he shared this is a great way for him to give back to the society.

“I’m equipped with the knowledge to teach, I want to utilise them to the fullest”, he said.

Touched by his dedication and generosity

Speaking to the Chinese mail, Lee revealed that when he first started out the venture, many schools thought he was a fraud as it sounded too good to be true. However, with his sincerity and dedication, he was able to move hearts of many, and the schools started opening their doors for him.

“I conduct workshops for free and the only thing I ask from the school is to provide me with accommodation for as long as I’m working at the school”, he said.

On top of the free workshops, Lee would also donate to the schools, hoping that they’re able to use the money upgrade the facilities. He shared that this venture of his has allowed him to travel around Malaysia and do something meaningful at the same time, making it the best of both worlds.

“It’s very rewarding to see the students opening up and being willing to speak English after the workshop”, he mentioned.
