Throughout the years, plenty of speed marts and convenience stores have appeared in Malaysia and one of the most popular ones that Malaysians love would be FamilyMart. With that said, FamilyMart has become one of the fastest growing convenience stores in Malaysia, reaching up to 360 stores nationwide.

FamilyMart stops selling alcoholic beverages since March, aiming to obtain halal cert

According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily the Managing Director of QL Maxincome Sdn Bhd, Chia Lik Khai, has reported that Family Mart Malaysia has stopped selling alcoholic beverages since March. The motive behind this move is to assert further confidence onto their Muslim customers, as well as to align their aim in obtaining a halal cert from Jakim.

When asked about sales reduction due to the discontinuation of selling alcoholic beverages, Chia was confident that the sales reduction impact is minimal as selling of alcoholic beverages have always been a minor part of their sales.

“We are relying on other products like our food and beverages to help with the sales reduction”, he said, further emphasising that the initiative to stop selling alcoholic beverages is also an attempt to help eliminate any encounters of non-halal products for the Muslim customers.

FamilyMart introduces new Café concept with halal certification by Jakim

Following that, Chia has also revealed that their new concept store named FamiCafé located at Menara U has been accorded with a halal certification by Jakim, allowing it to be the pioneer convenience store café to obtain such accreditation. The newly opened concept store features ready-to-eat meals as well as a variety of beverages to choose from. Chia then announced that their goal is to open over 300 FamiCafé outlets by 2025 that is equipped with the halal certification.

In alignment with their initiative to reassure its customers, FamilyMart will be going through halal audits to ensure that they are following the guidelines provided by Jakim. It’s worth noting that QL kitchen, FamilyMart Malaysia’s food preparation centre has been halal certified by Jakim since 2019. Subsequently, over 172 food products by FamilyMart have also been registered as halal on Jakim’s official halal portal.
