Just last week, a fight has broken out between an Indian and Chinese man at a convenience store, garnering plenty of attention online. As the video continues making waves online, radio station BFM has approached the man, known as Goh Yap Eng who is the owner of Kim Leong Mini Market.

Sharing his life story, Goh revealed that his current convenience store was actually passed down by his father. Quitting school at age of 13, the man shared that he’s been working in the store for over 34 years. While it was not his life choice to not help his father, Goh decided to stay on and continue his father’s legacy.
“I don’t have to, but I felt like I needed to because this is life. But I don’t regret it”, he said.

When asked about the most expensive item he has to spend for the store, he answered his time. While he is the store owner, he shared that it isn’t easy as he is also the cleaner, worker and storekeeper. However, he mentioned that sacrificing his time for the store is definitely vital as it keeps him in business.
Attempting to stand out from other convenience stores and hypermarkets around the area, Goh believes that the key to keeping his business alive is his customer service.

“People can feel the sincerity and once you know your customers, they would automatically return”, he said.

On top of that, Goh also shared that one of his strategies for keeping his business afloat is to operate on different hours. That being said, the man has tried different operating hours, ranging from 8am to 8pm, 11am to 11pm, to finally settling on 6:00pm to 11:30pm.

Sharing more about the fight that went viral, he shared that the fight has nothing to do with one’s race or if the other party was drunk. Due to virality of the incident, Goh was remanded by the police for 2 days and was released on Saturday afternoon. Looking back at the incident, the man shared that he wished that the whole ordeal did not happen.
Urging netizens to put the issue aside, he hopes that through the video, he is able to clarify that it was never a racial issue, and he hopes that it will not become a racial issue.
