M’sian firefighter sheds tears after burying his search & rescue dog
According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, a search and rescue dog, Cliff from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department sadly passed away on Christmas Day. Initial reports have mentioned that the 7-year-old English Springer Spaniel was diagnosed with a tumour in his bladder. However, despite receiving treatment for his condition, Cliff succumbed to his illness.
Following the death of Cliff, the fire department then held a simple and intimate funeral for him at the Sibu Fire and Rescue Station, where it was based since he arrived in Sarawak. Bidding farewell to the beloved English Springer Spaniel, Cliff’s handler of six years, Stephen, took it the hardest.
“He was very dedicated and could work for long hours”, said Stephen tearfully.
The loss of a friend, a family member
Recalling the times spent with Cliff, Stephen said it felt as if it was just yesterday when Cliff was brought into the department as a training pup. Working together for years, Stephen described Cliff as his “comrade-in-arms”, adding that the last time they worked together was in October last year.
“We were assigned to a drowning case in the inland area of Miri-Baram last October. After trekking for over 7 hours, Cliff successfully found the body of the victim”, mentioned Stephen.
Director of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, Dato’ Sirudin shared that the passing of Cliff has deeply impacted the team, especially his handler Stephen, as he has not only lost a friend, but a family member.
Rest in peace, Cliff, remember to cross the rainbow bridge for endless treats and playtime.
