In a time when the world can often feel cold and indifferent, we are reminded that even the smallest acts of kindness can truly make it a big difference. And in that vein, one considerate Malaysian man took it upon himself to spread a little kindness around when he recently encountered a man with a heartbreaking story.
Considerate M’sian buys man a meal after learning he had lost his job and home
As shared by TikTok user hariskacho to his profile, he explained in a short video how he was approached by a stranger when he was queuing up to pay for his meal at a local restaurant. At the time, the man told him that he had just been laid off from his job and asked if he could afford to spare him a meal.
Thinking that the man wanted to ask him for money, Haris initially refused as he noted that he was able-bodied.
“The man then proceeded to leave. But that was when I realised that he was asking for a meal, and not money. Which meant that he was truly hungry.” he said.
Immediately, instinct kicked in and he rushed to chase after the man from earlier. Upon finding him, Haris noted that he appeared to be trying to stave off his hunger, while dozing on an empty table in the food court of Pavilion shopping centre.
While paying for his meal, he struck up a conversation with the man and came to learn that he was forced out of his home by his landlord as he had failed to pay his rent, due to how his former employer had been holding on to his wages.
“He even wanted to take out a loan from loan sharks, I told him don’t resort to such lengths and advised him to rebuild his life, not to give up.”
Be kind, but also be careful
Having been viewed a whopping 1.1 million times a week after it was uploaded, Haris’ act of generosity has since gone viral over the local social media space and has garnered him much praise from Malaysians.
“You are chosen by Allah SWT. Congratulations for helping those in need, may your blessings be doubled.”
“Ya Allah SWT, I can feel my eyes welling up with tears. I swear, I have also been in the same situation, only I never let anybody know about it. I really had the intention of asking others to buy me white rice, because I was simply that hungry.”
However, some asked why he was hesitant at the beginning, when the man had only wanted a meal and not money. Haris reminded them that many have been known to take advantage of the kindness of others.
“Don’t just assume that he is able-bodied or what not, if he asks for help and you can spare it, just lend him a hand.”
“We all need to be careful these days. Many people who are lazy do that. There are plenty in KL.”
