Malaysians are generally an incredibly charitable lot by nature. Whether if its for the sake of feeding the needy or helping those who have been left victims of natural disasters, our fellow countrymen are often willing to go above and beyond to lend those in need a helping hand. However, this has also led to the rising issue of ‘beggar’ syndicates in the country that seek to prey on the kindness of others by pretending to be handicapped.
Woman secretly tails after ‘blind’ beggar and his associate
And just recently, it would seem that a local netizen has caught one such syndicate at work after they had decided to diligently trail after a supposedly ‘blind’ beggar who was accompanied with another woman. In a clip that was uploaded by Ms Wan Siti Sarah, also known as @wansitisarah11 on TikTok, she showed how two innocuous individuals had been wandering between tables outside a food stall along the roadside recently.
Approaching diners, the woman who was escorting the ‘blind’ man could be seen soliciting for donations. But unbeknownst to them, Sarah had been tailing them the entire time while filming their antics.
After they had left the restaurant, she continued to follow the duo from a distance as they walked hand-in-hand. While that alone may not necessarily raise many eyebrows, what happened subsequently after most certainly did.
The duo was later seen boarding a SUV, with the ‘blind’ man needing no assistance
Just further up along the road, the duo could then be seen boarding a white Toyota Rush SUV who had apparently been there to pick them both up. But instead of needing assistance as he did before, the blind man simply walked up to the car’s front passenger side, pulled the door open for himself and climbed on board, suggesting that he was not in fact blind!
The video, which has since been viewed over 2.2 million times, has led to many netizens praising Sarah’s persistence in following after the duo.
“The one doing the filming deserves to join 999 (local investigative journalism show).”
“You’re incredible! Do more investigations like these!”
Some others have also commented on the fact that many such syndicates continue to exploit the generosity of Malaysians, giving those who are truly in need a bad name.
“It’s because of issues like this that has made so many of us reluctant to offer any contributions. In our eyes, they are all still able to work to earn a living, despite being blind. One rotten apple spoils the bunch.”
“I have seen a similar case like this, but they came in a Pajero. From that point onwards, I’d rather just contribute to the mosque funds instead.”
