Taiwanese Mandopop icon Jay Chou is no stranger to the media spotlight given his illustrious career. But just recently, the superstar has been thrust into a furor with local football fans after stage construction for the upcoming leg of his long-delayed Carnival World Tour concert had reportedly occupied as many as 21,000 vacant seats at Stadium Bukit Jalil, ahead of the AFF Cup semi-finals.

Jay Chou’s upcoming M’sian concert blasted by local football fans

According to Youth and Sports Minister YB Hannah Yeoh, concert organisers for Jay’s performance had booked the venue back since 2019, but were unable to bring the event to Malaysia during its original 2020 date in the wake of global travel and live entertainment restrictions owing to the Covid-19 pandemic at the time. His show was slated to take place on 15th January, 2022.

On the other hand, the Football Association of Malaysia reserved their slot for the sporting match on August 18th, 2022. As a consequence of the clash in schedules, only 59,000 tickets could be sold to football fans.

Many who were left irate by the sudden change have since taken to condemning the pop star on his social media pages for depriving Malaysian football enthusiasts the opportunity of cheering their national team on, while also demanding that he call off his concert so that the stadium’s seats could be freed up for the upcoming match.

Singer speaks up, says he’s open to rescheduling

In the wake of the outcry, Jay has since spoken on the matter on his Instagram Stories and agreed that he would be open to working around a potential postponement. However, he has asked football fans to address their concerns to the venue or event organisers on the prospect of rescheduling instead.

“I just want to sing to my fans,” he adds.

Production for his Malaysian concert apparently required 14-days to complete, with 685 members of crew working to set-up the entire stadium venue for the show.
