For many people, one of the best parts about catching a plane flight would be the view it offers through the window seat. Which is probably why some may elect to specifically pick to sit at a window seat, so that they can enjoy the prerogative of watching the world breeze past as you fly across continents and oceans. But in the case of one Malaysian, his experience of taking a flight was soured when he found his seat occupied by a stranger.

As shared by Instagram user, @ayienrain, he explained how during a recent flight, he came to discover that somebody else had taken up his designated spot on a window seat.

“I just got on the plane and my patience was already tested. I bought that particular seat because I wanted to sit there specifically.”

Speaking to Wau Post, he said that he was on his way to Terengganu when the incident happened and revealed upon arriving at the designated bench of seats where his spot was located in seat 5A, he saw a woman sitting there. He then politely greeted her, and she smiled at him without the intention of moving.

He then told the woman politely that she had occupied his seat and even smiled at her, hoping that she would realise her mistake and move away. Instead, she looked at him and asked if she could sit at his seat instead. Understandably, he told her that he was not about to give up his window seat as he wanted what he had already paid for. Seeing that he refused to swap seats, she asked him again if he could sit at her designated seat, 5C, instead.

“The seat I bought is 5A, please, this is my seat”, he repeated.

Unfortunately, the woman did not want to move and began to bicker with him saying that it’s the same regardless if he sits at 5A or 5C.

“Isn’t it just the same, whether if it’s in A or C?” she contended.

Growing impatient, he then slightly raised his voice at the woman, asking her to move. Following that, the woman had no choice but to move and went back to her own seat.

When asked if the woman apologised for sitting at his spot, he revealed that the woman did not say a word to him after she moved back to her seat. After the incident, he urged netizens that encounter such incident to be brave and politely ask for them to swap their seats.

“If they refuse to move from your designated seat, just let the flight attendant know and they will help you out with it. Try to not create a scene as it’s not worth it”, he said.

Following his story, many people have shared similar experiences of having their seats stolen, and how they handled it.

One claims that travel insurance policies require passengers to be at their designated seats, and that those who were not found at their seats during any untoward incidents can have their insurance claims voided.

“I understand that we’re allowed to switch seat with the permission of a flight attendant and there are seats allowed but, in this case, we’ve bought the seat we have the rights to sit there. We paid for the seat, it’s not assigned automatically.”

“For me, you’ve made the right decision to ask her. You paid for the seat, of course you should get your seat. I’ve experienced this before, no mercy shown because I wanted the window seating view. Unless if the person wants to pay me for that seat, then yes please take my seat.”
