Recently it was revealed that former prime minister Najib Razak has requested for and will be offered a privilege from the ruling government in the form of a 2.8-acre housing property worth RM100 million nestled in the luxurious neighborhood of Bukit Petaling in Kuala Lumpur.
The affair has since drawn in much derision from both members of the Parliament as well as fellow Malaysians, especially given the current economic downturn faced by the nation in light of the COVID pandemic and Datuk Seri Najib’s ongoing corruption charges.
Najib to turn down RM100 million property offer for the sake of the people
In the most recent update surrounding the alleged property offer, former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak has announced that he will not be accepting the land allocation granted to him by the Perikatan Nasional government. The offer is worth RM100 million.
Astro Awani reports that Najib’s decision to decline the offer was made after members of the opposition party had exploited the ongoing issue as a means to obtain political leverage for the ongoing campaigns that are being held for the upcoming Melaka state elections. To date, the allotment has yet to be formally approved by Parliament, and various Parliamentary members including Tun Mahathir are said to stand opposed against the decision.
Najib is turning down the offer for the sake of Malaysians
The Pekan Member of Parliament explains that although his application for a property back in 2018 is in line with the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980, he understands that with the current struggles that the country is facing with COVID-19, the welfare and interests of the citizens are of utmost priority.
He acknowledges the challenges and difficulties that are faced by Malaysians, and has requested that current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob look into the provisions stipulated by the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980 due to the backlash that it has created among the public. Previously, Datuk Seri Najib had stated that he was only asking for what he was entitled to as an ex-Prime Minister as prescribed by the Act.
