Not long ago, a Malaysian cobbler has gone viral after his humble request for a fellow Malaysian to help him promote his services on social media. Thankfully, the post made was able to gain traction, helping the cobbler who was trying to make an honest living.
63yo M’sian cobbler shares that he wasn’t able to earn money before going viral
At the age of 63 where many would be enjoying their retired life, Ujang Samsudin has to continue working as a cobbler in hopes of earning some money for him to pay rent and put food on the table. Recalling his past to local daily Berita Harian, the hardworking man shared that he started working as a cobbler back in 1983.
“When I was young, my friends would often ask me to work with them and we would do many different jobs”, he said.

But as his age settled in, Ujang decided to settle down by working as a cobbler, devoting his time into improving his skills. He said,
“My eyes are getting blurry, and I no longer have that burst of energy I used to have when I was younger.”
Since 2019, Ujang has moved quite a bit, from Batang Kali to Johor, then to Shah Alam before settling at his current place in Bandar Baru Ampang. Of the 3 months that he’s been here, the man revealed that it is very challenging as he has gone by weeks without having any customers. One day, as he was resting while fixing a pair of shoes, he came across a man who came out from the ATM.

“I called out to him, and he asked if I needed any help. I then humbly asked if he could help me post about my business on social media and to my surprise, he agreed”, said Ujang.
As Jimmy’s post went viral online, Ujang has been receiving more customers and for that, he is very grateful for the support shown. Sharing his struggles, Ujang shared that the lack of customers back then has caused him to have an empty pocket for weeks. However, with the current customers he gets, Ujang is able to pay for his rent, as well as put food on the table.
“Back then I couldn’t even earn RM10 a day. I don’t ask for much, I just hope I earn enough to cover my rent and other bills”, he mentioned, adding that he pays RM380 a month for rent.
