To be able to compete in any sports event is never easy as it requires plenty of dedication and resilience, on top of juggling your academic responsibilities. Just recently, a 19-year-old girl has proven herself, after clinching a gold medal and setting a personal best record at the 2024 SUKMA.
19yo Sabahan wins gold medal for high jump in SUKMA
Hailing from a small town of Kunak, Sabah, Ku Yee Aleng was an aspiring athlete with a knack for the high jumps event. While she was dedicated, working hard towards her goals, she mentioned that her late father was not supportive of her path.
“He believes that my focus should be on my academics and not sports”, she said.

Despite that, Yee Aleng was determined and continued on with her passion, while juggling her academic responsibilities. After years of hard work and perseverance, she was given the opportunity to compete in SUKMA. Thankfully, her sacrifices have paid off as she was able to win the gold medal, setting a personal best record at 1.64 meters.
Winning the medal, Yee Aleng couldn’t help but tear up. Recalling what her late father had told her she was saddened at the fact that he wasn’t able to witness her progress.
“I cried because I remembered what he said and I knew he only wanted me to focus on my studies”, she mentioned.

She added that while she was taking her UPSR, her results weren’t the brightest but with her hard work she was able to turn things around, excelling in both her studies and sports. With that said, Yee Aleng didn’t only just win a gold medal at the SUKMA, she was also offered a placement to study t the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Gaya Campus in Sabah.
“I only wish he was here to see me”, she said.
