Just recently, the Malaysia government has announced that they will no longer be issuing the physical driver’s license as well as road tax stickers. With that said, Malaysians are required to download an app called MyJPJ and all of their documentations will be shown in the app after signing up and logging in.
Two M’sians get fined in Thailand despite showing their digital driver’s license
Unfortunately for these 2 men, it seems like the digital licenses did not work as they encounter a police block in Thailand. According to a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), a man shared that a fine could be imposed to Malaysians if they’re unable to present a valid physical driver’s license.

“If you’re planning to drive to Thailand, it’s possible that you might get fined for not having a physical driver’s license”, he said.
He continued in his post saying that the officer kept asking if he has the ‘original’ (physical) driver’s license. He tried his best to explain to the officer that all of the documentations are now in an app and physical driver’s license are no longer issued but the officer wasn’t accepting of the fact.

“I kept showing him the app and told him that this is how things are in Malaysia, but he refused and kept insisting on wanting a physical driver’s license”, he mentioned.
At the end, both him and his friend were fined as they were unable to show their physical driver’s license. Following the incident, local newspaper Sin Chew Daily reported that an international driver’s license is not required when driving in Thailand. The only requirement needed is a valid driver’s license issued by the authorities in Malaysia.
