Introduced to local shores all the way back in December 1998 by the Berjaya Group, Seattle-based coffee chain Starbucks has since gone on to witness incredible success in Malaysia and is now a familiar sight in many parts of the country. But coffee asides, they are also well-remembered for proffering a wide range of merchandise as well, chief among them being their intricately designed tumblers and mugs.
M’sian content creator lies to his mother that Starbucks tumblers only cost RM20
And just recently, Malaysian digital content creator Syukor Majid took to sharing a rather hilarious anecdote of how his own mother became a Starbucks tumbler afficionado over a white lie he told. Taking to Facebook, he recounted how he had decided to take his mother to a Starbucks outlet to have a coffee, when she found herself being drawn in by the shelves of beautifully designed tumblers.
Noticing how much she seemed to like them, he decided to buy one for her. Out of curiosity, she asked Syukor how much one of the tumblers costed. Knowing well enough that she would rather turn down the gift and have him save his money if she knew that the tumblers cost RM200 a piece on average, he lied and told her that it only set him back RM20, in hopes of allaying her concerns.
Mum becomes an avid collector of tumblers
Little did he know that the white lie would eventually backfire on him as his mother, in thinking that the well-made and exquisitely decorated tumblers were really only RM20 a piece, would wind up developing an ‘addiction’ for them.
“Now every time I bring her to Starbucks, she would want to bring a tumbler home.” he said.
To date, Syukor notes that his mother has already collected five tumblers, the newest of which was a Chinese New Year limited-edition unit that was recently released by the coffee chain, in conjunction with the Year of The Rabbit. A quick check on the Starbucks Malaysia site indicates that the rabbit-themed tumbler costs RM198 to purchase.
“I guess it’s now time to tell her how much they really cost,” he jokingly mentioned before ending his post.
His post has since gone viral, with netizens leaving amused comments about how his innocent deception wound up turning on him instead.
“Actually, your mum knows how much they cost but she just wants to use up all your money. If she doesn’t do it, who else would right?”
“My wife is also a big collector of these tumblers, bro. Other people go in for a coffee, she goes in to buy a new tumbler.”
