A woman who allegedly attempted to end her life by leaping off the Penang Bridge was fortunately saved by a helmsman and four anglers, when the group saw her plunging down into the seawaters below. As reported by local newspaper Harian Metro, the incident was said to have taken place at around 6.45pm on Sunday (October 16th, 2022).
Group of anglers successfully save woman after she allegedly jumped off Penang Bridge
At the time, 37-year-old Mohd Sobri Karim, who was piloting the small fishing boat, had collected a a team of four anglers who were out on one of the bridge’s pillars and was en-route to pick-up another two anglers at around Kilometre 4.0 of the bridge from Perai heading towards Georgetown. As they were moving, the group suddenly saw something fall from the bridge before landing into the water right in-front of their boat.
“Just as the victim was starting to sink while being pulled along by the currents, I reached out to her hand and tied it against the mooring rope of the boat to stop her from sinking further.
With the help of the four other anglers, we gradually reeled the rope back before helping the woman up onto the boat.” Sobri said.
Upon successfully saving her from the clutches of certain death, they immediately rushed over to the Batu Uban Marine Police Jetty, where she was handed over to emergency medical personnel who were waiting at the scene.
Victim appeared to be six to seven months pregnant
While they were making their way to the jetty, Sobri said that the woman appeared distraught and could not stop crying. Appearing to be in her 20s, she was also between six and seven months pregnant.
“We believe she drove a white car and stopped at the bridge before leaping into the sea.
Thank the Almighty that she is safe, and most importantly so is her baby, which means we managed to save two lives.” he adds.
While this was Sobri’s first time saving someone who had plunged from the Penang Bridge, he said that he has previously persuaded two separate individuals not to end their lives from the same bridge.
